It's an intriguing tale. The name, "Doggett's Coat and Badge," honors Thomas Doggett, who organized the historic London Bridge to Chelsea rowing race in the Thames. This event, dating back to 1715, is considered the oldest continuous sporting competition in the UK. The four-mile, seven-furlong race occurs annually in July. The winner was originally awarded a waterman's coat and badge, inspiring the pub's name.
Upon Doggett's death in 1721, he bequeathed in his will that The Fishmongers' Company continue the race, a tradition upheld to this day. Located along the race course in South Bank, our pub is named in homage to its founder.

The family came here for a pre-theatre dinner. The views across the Thames in the curved windows are just lovely and make a great conversation point. The restaurant was very clean and the good was all delicious and very well presented. There were two hardworking staff on: it was extremely busy (all tables full and people queueing). The waiters were really friendly and acknowledged everyone but the management really need to staff the place better. It's not fair at all to have just two people taking orders, serving, cleaning tables, welcoming people, making the drinks, sorting out the bills etc. They did their best and it was great but the service was very slow. I went up to speak to the waiter called Wez to explain that we had a show to catch so could he please come and take our order and bring us the bill at the same time. I apologised for seeming pushy but we were short of time. Wez was just exceptional. Despite it being so busy and rushed, he took his time with us to make sure the order was correct and brought us everything as soon as it was out. I work in pub hospitality myself so I know how hard it is when you're left under staffed but still trying to do a good job. Management, please sort it out. You're in prime London location, loads of people are coming for dinner and theatre shows, there should be more than two people serving on a Saturday night.

Great location, good pub food, and excellent service in the Dining level. Enjoyed it very much. Picture is the vista you can see close by the pub. Can get very busy in the evening so suggest you make a reservation.

The place looked very good upstairs in the restaurant, very quiet and good welcoming place. When we arrived it felt it was short of staff probably just not enough people for the right pick of the day. Once we had our food , which was very good, we just paid and went home. Must admit this pub has the most cleaned toilet I ever seen in London!
