The Pen and Pencil sits on the corner of Hilton and Tariff Street in Manchester’s lively Northern Quarter. Our bar and eatery is open seven days a week from 10am ’til late.
We take our name and inspiration from the infamous mid-20th Century bar on East 45th Street in New York’s ‘Steak Row’ which was popular with newspaper journalists and ad men – the original ‘Mad Men’.
Looking for a late night party? Our team of resident DJs are on hand on Friday and Saturday nights to get the party started every weekend. Plus we offer private hire for networking meetings, private parties and launch events.
Our private room is available 7 days a week, comes with its own exclusive bar, screen and projector and can accommodate up to 70 guests. Full venue hire is available on selected days - capacity is 200 guests.
We have a number of food options available to suit all tastes, budgets and dietary requirements including sliders, canapés and a 3-course menu.

For any cancellations made at least 2-weeks before an event, we will refund your deposit in full. For any cancellations made later than that, no refund will be due.

February 2024Great brunch here, relaxed atmosphere, can book a table online! Drinks were all really nice and the food was good, the french toast in particular was delicious. Service from Niall and other staff members was fantastic, very friendly and grabbed some sausages and bowl of water for our dog. We’ll be back 👍

January 2024I kept seeing this place when passing and decided that I’ll take my friend with me the other week and honestly it was really nice. The staff were lovely, I had a smoke on the water cocktail unfortunately they didn’t have an ingredient for it but the staff recommended something else to put into the drink and it was great. My friend had a Black Forest cocktail and they said it was lovely. The food was really nice we went during brunch so I ordered the breakfast burrito it was delicious, they got the buttermilk chicken burger and again it was fantastic. I have now recommended this place to friends and family and I will definitely be returning.

March 2023Really nice venue, coffee and shake was good. My steak and eggs were cold and my mother's breakfast was also cold. We told our waitress and she brought my mum a fresh breakfast and took my food off the bill. So while the food was a bit of a let down the customer service saved it and I'd go back again just for that. I believe our server was called Ana, lovely person, always smiling and very attentive.
