Corporate Awards Ceremonies: Why They're Replacing the Christmas Party in 2026
When is a Christmas Party not a Christmas Party? When it’s packaged up and rebranded as an Awards Ceremony!
Companies are replacing Christmas parties with awards ceremonies because they deliver more value per pound spent: stronger employee retention through visible recognition, a genuine external-facing brand and networking opportunity, and reusable content for recruitment and PR all in one event, at a time when enquiries for the format are up 57% year-on-year.
Why an Awards Ceremony Beats a Christmas Party for Retention
Depending on the company size and strength of culture getting a strong turn out for a large Christmas party can be challenging. Millennials will remember the company Christmas Party as the big event to drink the company dry in return for all the late nights and anxiety. An excuse to party the night away with the confidence that any beer fear will have dissipated by the time everyone returns to the office in the new year.
The new work force is different. Gen Zs drink less; have a healthier work relationship with work life balance and are more protective of their personal time. In 2025 an employer of 800 people had (they estimated) a 55% turnout for their Christmas Party. Venue booked; food ordered; drinks ordered and 45% of that budget gone to waste (although I’m sure all the millennials in attendance had a blast)!
What people care about increasingly is tangible recognition. Something that they can promote on their social media and LinkedIn. Recognition is one of the top drivers in employee retention - people who feel under valued leave. The cost of replacing them is far greater than a 3 course menu. At the end of a busy year, where everyone is looking forward to a well earned break, show the team that their efforts are visible, tracked, appreciated and rewarded - in front of their peers. What gets celebrated gets repeated. An awards ceremony is a visible, ritualised way to define "what good looks like" for the whole organization, not just the winner. It lets leadership publicly connect individual/team wins to company values or strategic priorities turning abstract values into concrete, named examples.
Namely, people are turning up to the event in exchange for something else, but everyone’s getting something out of it. A great replacement strategy for a Christmas Party.
Why an Awards Ceremony Builds External Reputation
Invite a Christmas party guest and they're there for the free bar. Invite a client, partner, or industry contact to an awards ceremony and they're watching how your business treats its people, which is a far more useful thing for them to see. A supplier deciding between you and a competitor, or a candidate deciding between two job offers, learns more from watching your team get genuinely applauded for a year's work than from any pitch deck or careers page.
The content afterwards is the cherry on top of the ice cream. A Christmas party gives you a few blurry photos of the finance team on the dancefloor (there is embarrassing video footage of a VenueScanner Christmas Party where the MD; Chief of Staff and Head of Corporate danced on stage whilst our much cooler colleagues looked on…confused). An awards ceremony gives you a winner holding a trophy, a name, a category, and a reason. The perfect LinkedIn post, case study, or a line in next year's recruitment deck. A year's worth of content marketing made in one evening, without a content calendar or a brief.
There's also a timing argument. Trust in AI-generated content is dropping just as fast as AI content is multiplying, and real, in-person moments, a room full of actual people applauding an actual achievement, are becoming rarer and more valuable precisely because of that. An awards ceremony isn't just an event; right now, it's proof of something real.
Our VenueScanner for Business team are on hand to consult with corporate businesses to discuss their event strategy and how they can make their events work harder for them. As the year comes to a close, reach out and book some time to discuss your 2027 plans and they will have advise on budget; venues and format. Check out some great awards venues that are also perfect for a conference if you want to a two-in-one event.
