Alan Yau's original noodle chain has had to deal with a lot of indie competition of late – especially in the capital, where authentic ramen has become a gastronomic touchstone for the Instagram generation. However, his light, airy, industrial-style venues still hold their own, offering “amazing food” at very fair prices, with help from perky staff who “bend over backwards to help”. Of course, the menu touts much more than noodles, with well-presented Japanese curries, teppanyaki, comforting donburi rice bowls and chilli-laden stir-fries all staking their claim. Dishes are served as they're ready, meaning that everyone in your party might end up eating separately – although Wagamama was always designed for speedy refuelling rather than lingering. Drinks-wise, stick to the Japanese beers and sakés, or try one of the health-boosting fruit and vegetable juices (a recent addition to the menu).
