Right outside the entrance to South Bank’s new dining hub Flat Iron Square, Lupins is the brainchild of catering friends Lucy Pedder and Natasha Cooke. The laid-back space shares its first floor with neighbouring Burnt Lemon Bakery and features a small dining counter for chef-watching, while the upstairs dining room is a calming mix of exposed brickwork, faded pink seating and coloured scatter cushions. The seasonal menu is equally as vibrant, filled with colourful dishes like sea bass ceviche served in lettuce cups and dotted with greens. Friendly, funny staff recommend one ‘snack’ each, and two to three small plates, but most dishes are suited to sharing. Dainty chorizo croquettes stuffed with béchamel sauce and wrapped in breadcrumbs kicked things off nicely, but the stand-out was easily Lupin’s posh take on a 2am kebab; crispy, pull-apart pork belly served on flatbread drizzled in mint sauce, and topped with salad. A short selection of desserts includes a cheese platter from Neal’s Yard and vanilla panna cotta, but our thick, rich dark chocolate mousse with sesame snaps and salted caramel sauce was a real crowd-pleaser. The drinks offering also evolves with the seasons, but wines by-the-glass and fresh juices are at its core, with tea and coffee also available. With other tenants including Bar Douro and Where The Pancakes Are, Flat Iron Square has shaped up nicely as a solid South Bank option.
