Tips for surviving your annual office Christmas party

The office Christmas party is often one of the highlight events of the year. Everyone is in high spirits, everyone is ready for a good time, and everyone wants to close the year off in style. Here are some tips to ensure you don’t wake up with mega ‘post-party shame’ the next morning (don’t worry, we’ve all been there)!
1. The pre-prep
The anticipation of the work Christmas bash can often provide some office buzz in the hours running up to the event, especially if it’s an evening event. Everyone is a bit distracted and fidgety, and people often rush to complete last minute tasks. Without sounding like your mum, make sure you eat lunch even if you’re not hungry or there is no time. You can thank us later.
2. Don’t be excessive
Hold back on the alcohol consumption (at least until your boss has gone home). If you consume too much too early that’s ok, but introduce a timeout period. At the end of the day, excess leads to over-excitement, oversharing and this can often lead to you waking up the next morning wanting to bury your head under your pillow.
3. Beware of the cocktails
Christmas cocktails can be lethal. Even if it is just an extreme sugar rush, heavy consumption of these over-indulgent cocktails could send you over the edge!
4. Mingle
The Christmas party is one of those rare times you get quality time with your colleagues away from the office. Take advantage of this event to get to know colleagues outside your daily circle. This will be advantageous both personally and professionally. Tip: whilst mingling is a must, don’t spend the whole time (or any time) talking about work.
5. Don’t overshare
This really should be a part (b) to the above. Whilst I commend those of you who step out of your comfort zone and strike up a conversation with someone of senior rank, make sure you engage brain before you engage mouth. Try not to share your deepest darkest secrets or become the centre of office gossip. It will not help your cause!
