OPENS SUMMER 2018Most of Britain’s ‘Indian’ restaurants are owned by Bangladeshis, but Little Kolkata positions itself firmly on the West Bengal side of the border. It has graduated from a successful supper club to a restaurant proper, settling in at a permanent home in Covent Garden. Co-founders Prabir Chattopadhyay and Biswajit Deb Das have filled the space with Kolkata-inspired decor, and created a menu that majors in Bengali-style sharing dishes. Kick off a meal with the likes of spiced fish egg, or a cod-fish cutlet served with Calcuttan mustard sauce, then perhaps graduate on to larger plates such as chicken liver sautéed with spice and chillies. Desserts include an enticingly indulgent cardamom coffee brownie served with rose ice cream. The cocktail menu also takes its influences from the region; try the Saffron Spritz or the Indian Summer (with jasmine vodka). Pocket-friendly prices are another draw, with sharing plates starting from £5.
