On Dorset’s beautiful and dramatic Jurassic Coast, the Gardens bask in their own micro-climate.
Established in 1765 by the first Countess of Ilchester as a kitchen garden for her nearby castle, today the Gardens are filled with exotic and spectacular plants from all over the world, offering amazing backgrounds for your special photographs and video.
You and your guests will enter our private landscaped wedding garden through an exclusive wrought-iron gateway leading to a secluded lawn surrounded by lush plants, trees and flowers.
As your guests look on, take your vows in our charming gazebo, licensed for civil ceremonies.
Our new, purpose-built permanent marquee nestles amid exotic planting.
Seating up to 150 people, this light and airy space with glass-panelled walls and wide entrances allows guests to feel they are truly a part of the Gardens.
The marquee has a permanent natural wooden floor – perfect for dancing!
Then during the long summer evenings, you and your guests will have exclusive access to wander at will through the entire Subtropical Gardens.
Situated on the south coast approximately eight miles from the coastal towns of Weymouth and Bridport, our Subtropical Gardens are situated in the quaint historic village of Abbotsbury.
Just three hours by road from London, 50 miles from the M5 motorway, and 10 miles from the nearest mainline rail stations in Weymouth and Dorchester, the Gardens are another world, but so easy to reach.

February 2024Stunning gardens, even on a wet February day. The camellias are blooming, the trees in bud and everything is beginning to wake up for spring. Very dog friendly, even welcome dogs in the cafe. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would love to return on a sunny summer's day to sit and enjoy the fabulous surroundings. Thanks to the staff in the cafe who were super friendly and the gardeners who must be congratulated for their efforts. We loved it!

January 2024Visited for the first time and booked for the Christmas illumination. It was Absolutely beautiful🤩 it was an extremely windy evening but once you are in the gardens it’s like a different world. Sheltered and clam. Stunning plants and trees lit up in multi colours. Simply magical.

November 2023Gorgeous walk today. Lots of variety of tree and plants. The lily ponds and bridges are a lovely touch. Disabled access and pathways are very well thought out. The little alice in wonderland scuptures are exquisite.
