Situated in the Hamlet of Stone Chair near Shelf, The Duke of York is one of the stopping off points on many published walks. The actual Stone Chair erected in 1737 is opposite the front entrance of the Inn.
Built in the early 1800’s the ‘Duke’ boasts a grade 2 listed façade with mullioned windows & ivy covered walls the original buildings were a house & barn, the barn entrance now features a large frosted window, these were combined into the present Inn sometime during the 1900’s .
The Restaurant which boasts an open fire was once the barn & the house is now an open plan bar & dining area. A full lunch and evening meal menu is available Thursday through Sunday. The pub is disabled access friendly and has ample free off-road parking.

Had a lovely meal, delicious and plentiful. Great service, very friendly. The room we were in wasn't particularly Christmassy and felt a bit bare, so could do with some cosying up but didn't detract at all from the food. A really nice pub.

Absolutely amazing pub! Just been newly taken over and it’s back and better than ever. We came for lunch and the service from new assistant manager Ellie and manager Ben was spectacular. Very accommodating and nothing was too much to ask for, also the food with chef Chris was amazing, everything was perfectly cooked and presented lovely! Definitely recommend for lunch/ dinner! Thank you all for making our time there memorable, we will definitely be back x

The Duke of York has improved drastically in the last couple of months. Under new ownership the pub has got its customers back and the atmosphere is really good. We also tried the food yesterday and it was really nice and really tasty. I highly recommend the Beef Croquettes of the small plate menu and the Steak and Potato Pie for the main course. The only minor negative came when they decided to turn the volume of the music up a fair few notches. For the first hour or two the sound level was fine, loud enough to hear and enjoy but quiet enough to have a conversation. It got turned up to a point where we couldn’t hear anyone talking, however they did turn it back down upon request so that was really appreciated. We visit here fairly regular, even before the new ownership and will continue to do again.

Amazing chef Chris and his partner in Crime Tom. They make delicious filling food, great prices, 20% off deal for lunch 12pm -2pm. Great choice of lagers and ales and great atmosphere. I recommend to anyone who loves good food and drink

The food was great - just a pity we had to wait so long to get it. It took over an hour before someone took our order. Then it took almost another hour before our starters arrived. We were told there was a back up in the kitchen but that didn’t explain why one drink took almost 20 minutes to arrive nor why other people, who had arrived after us, had been served and almost finished eating before our starters arrived.
