What an amazing castle. Take time to read the information at various points throughout the castle and you will get more from your visit. Mary Queen of Scots stayed here. There is a cafe which serves homemade pastries and cakes. There are wild boars with little piglets behind the car parking area. There is also a birds of prey demonstration behind the garden and maze.

A really good day out. Lovely scenery around with plenty of walks. The castle was not too staged so it gave a feel of how a medieval castle might have felt and the falconry demonstration was very good with good interaction with the crowd. We had coffee and cake in the cafe and the carrot cake was excellent. It felt that there was lots for children including the small maze, dressing up, writing with quill pens.

First impression at the admission was the very warm and welcoming gentleman. Great start. We only wished to see the garden which initially we thought was a bit small. However the gardeners were very knowledgeable and the gardens immaculate and we particularly loved that there was so much information near the garden beds about the plants and how and why they were used in days gone by. Very very well laid out. We had a bonus display of birds of prey with beautiful birds flying well and again the spiel was given by a very knowledgeable and entertaining young lady who really knows her stuff. Also listen to her speak about the wild boars. For us we were so happy to have visited Bolton Castle and well done.

Called to visit the gardens as we'd a 2 for 1 offer from Gardeners World so it only cost us £5 to enter. It was a lovely day but it was at the beginning of May so probably not the best time to see a garden. Not much was in flower and we were too early to see the bees but it's a pleasant, if small, area to walk round. The 4 stars are given as the man on admissions was so lovely -such a laugh and the girl in charge of the falconry was so genuinely interested in the birds. She was a delight to talk to. Thank you for giving us your time. Having seen what the rest of the castle has to offer I doubt we would go back and pay the entrance fee. The cafe is large and the fire was on. There's a good choice of cake and some pies. The date slice was very good but the coffee cake was dry. The staff were very pleasant and it was less than £13 for two coffees and two pieces of cake. Very reasonable. The cafe can be accessed without having to pay to go in the castle BUT there is a charge for the car park. It is possible to park on the main road of the village (the village is small but beautiful with amazing views) but I can imagine it would soon become a nuisance in summer. It is possible to walk there across footpaths from Redmires.
