Stayed here for one night in January. A very grand hotel set in the heart of Manchester, a short walk from Oxford Road railway station. The public areas are all historic and very impressive. The room we stayed in was on the 4th floor, a few steps to climb before you got to the lift. The lift doors had an issue whilst we were there, and they would get stuck on opening, this sorted during our stay. The room was very comfortable and well equipped, just one or two maintenance and layout issues - a stain or two on the carpet and badly placed heated towel rail by the bath, that you could burn yourself on very easily - my partner caught his elbow on it. Some rooms have a view, ours didn't have a great one - probably should have booked direct! We had a drink in the Refuge, which is a very nice area to chill out in. The breakfast was superb, with great options for hot and cold food, a good mix of full English and Continental, priced at £22 per person. The staff are all very welcoming, friendly, and helpful, creating a lovely atmosphere. I would stay here again, highly recommend.

Lovely hotel, we booked a premium king room , it was nice but very dark. We should have asked to move really but we put up with it. The room was on the third floor (377) so it was nice and quiet but the walls were panelled with dark wood , and as there was no central light, it was very hard to see anything ! The bed wasn’t very comfortable, the mattress seemed to tilt to one side although the sheets and pillows were very good quality. Also, there needs to be an electric socket by the mirror…. And the inner door creaked loudly. Next time I will ask for a much brighter room. We had a couple of issues with waiting for our room to be cleaned on our second day and a problem with the coffee machine, but they were dealt with immediately which was pretty impressive. Breakfast was very good quality , but goes cold very quickly as you are served from a buffet station. Great selection of fruits, yogurt and pastries. Coffee was good too. I would definitely stay again but would ask for a better brighter room.

First impressions were mind blowing. The art deco design was absolutely stunning, and as I entered the hotel and walked in the foyer, it made me feel special. The reception staff were very warm and welcoming, as were all the staff I encountered. I was travelling with work colleagues and we were all upgraded and the rooms were as grand as the rest of the hotel, although upon closer inspection there were some minor snagging issues. So why only 4 stars? Firstly and most importantly, there was a lack of sound proofing for the main road. My room was at the front of the hotel and I could hear music from a local nightclub, over-excited revellers wandering the streets and boy racers revving up their cars trying to impress passers by. As a frequent traveller, I always travel with ear plugs and an eye mask, as I have had too many sleepless nights in hotels, and I would recommend coming with ear plugs for this hotel (no need for an eye mask). Another issue was the smoked glass bathroom door. I don't understand why so many hotels use them when only a handful of guests will be okay with them. I was upgraded to a double room with two beds, if I was sharing with someone, I would have felt very uncomfortable using the bathroom. To all hotels, please stop with these pretentious doors and just stick to solid doors allowing privacy in the bathroom. Enough with the style over function rubbish. I had a full English breakfast and again, the staff were amazing. The breakfast was okay. I thought the sausages were too dry, i.e. not enough fat content. The tomato tasted odd, I couldn't place what it was seasoned/cooked with, but it tasted odd, everything else I had was good. Overall, I would recommend the hotel, especially at the price, you certainly do feel special staying there, but I would request a quiet room.
