The Queen is in residence at the Palace of Holyroodhouse during Holyrood week, which usually takes place from the end of June to the beginning of July. Then the Scottish variant of the Royal Standard of the United Kingdom is flown, and the Royal Company of Archers forms Her Majesty's ceremonial bodyguard.

The Queen received His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI at Holyroodhouse during The Pope’s official visit to the UK in September 2010. The gift presented by His Holiness to Her Majesty, a facsimile of the Lorsch Gospels, is on display at the Palace.

Had a great couple of hours here. The audio guide was excellent and it was good to learn about the rich history of the palace. Nice cafe too with lots of options and very clean toilets!

If you come to Edinburgh, it is a must-visit palace after Edinburgh Castle. As I learned the history of Scotland from this place, I came to understand the time and it was a wonderful place to know the famous and important events in the history of England. However, what made me sad is that taking pictures is prohibited unconditionally inside. It should be left in your memory, so I hope you see and feel a lot. It is said that the current king of Charles visits once a year, but his territory cannot be visited.

Really fascinating history. The tour is self guided and recorded on an iPod, so it’s easy to roam around and go as you please. It’s a must for those who love history. Unfortunately there are no photos inside the palace, but it’s worth checking out.

A good way to spend 2 hours. I like the outside grounds and gardens more than the inside of the palace, which is still active with royal activities. If you see a room, you see them all. The gallery is probably my favorite part inside the palace - mainly because of the big-nosed paintings. Listen to the self guided tour and you'll find out why.

While the palace itself is magnificent and offers a rich cultural experience, I found the entry fee to be quite expensive compared to similar attractions. Although the free audio guide adds value, the high cost might not feel justified for all visitors, especially given the restriction on photography inside. For the price charged, I would have expected either more access, additional included features, or a more flexible visitor experience. It’s a beautiful site, but the admission price could be a barrier for some.
