About Venue

Hold your wedding surrounded by thousands of years’ worth of stunning history.
Built when Colchester became the first Roman Capital of Britain, Colchester Castle is the biggest surviving Norman Keep in Europe. Ordered by William the Conqueror around 1076, it is built on the foundations of the earlier Roman Temple of Claudius, dating back to AD 54-50. It is home to over 2000 years’ worth of History, from Royalty to besieges, imprisonments, and executions.
The Chapel is by far the most popular place that our couples choose to exchange their vows. The high vaulted white ceilings give the space a stunning romantic and peaceful charm, and the tinted natural daylight which fills the room through the stained windows, adding to the ethereal atmosphere of the room.
Named after Charles Gray himself, the Charles Gray Room is the most popular private space within Colchester Castle to hold a wedding breakfast. It holds up to 80 seated guests, making it an appealing and intimate space for you to spend time with your family and friends.

Well worth a visit - definitely book on to the tour where you'll see parts of the castle you can't otherwise visit and the guide brings alive the history behind the site

Colcester Castle Museum is on the smaller side, but there are a few floors to explore and a good amount of interactions that are great for young children interested in history. There is also a fantastic park outside and a huge sand pit, which has plenty to do. It's a good little afternoon trip. I wrote about our experience on our local blog, Life with Jupiter and Dann.

Castle is beautiful, but a very small area is open to visitors and if you want to see more, you have to pate extra for guided tours. I find this terrible, considering that the ticket is expensive enough to start with. Staff were nice and the surrounding gardens and park are beautiful. However, I don't think it was worth the money and would not go back to visit the castle. Better to see the castle from the outside and enjoy the park, as that is free.
