I have stayed at this hotel on numerous occasions (business & pleasure). The location is ideal to reach when visiting from Cornwall & other counties. So easy to do a short walk to the beautiful city of Exeter via Georgian architecture or a quiet pathway. The Old Quay is a must if you wish to get off the beaten track. Taxi's are very prompt & the reception team are willing to assist. In fact you could not wish for a better friendly, courteous, obliging team! This is an unpretentious hotel so do not expect 5 star luxury however the ambience is amazing. The beds are super comfy. The spa is small a bit tired in areas but fab & if you can make it in the quieter hrs all the better. Thank you to all, re night porter, concierge, bar staff, waiters, reception etc. I will be back.

Stayed for 1 night yesterday room 267. Very nice, water was hot but the lower shower button choice kept falling out and the small flush on the toilet didn't work! As it was hot I have to take the duvet out of the cover and just use that. This morning I turned back the cover to find tea/coffee stains!! We both didn't sleep well due to the noise from air-conditioning or fridgertion units on the outer buildings, humming noise all night. On leaving this morning no one on reception asked how our stay was!! Who knows if we'd return again. I feel our 4 star review is being very generous.

Situated five minutes' walk from the Quay, the hotel is in a good location to explore the city, with the bonus of a car park (£15 per night). The hotel felt modern and as though it had been updated fairly recently, although our superior room was a bit dated and some of the furniture and fittings were a bit shabby. Service was friendly, helpul and efficient and we were moved to a different room when our original one was unsuitable (but was more up to date than our second room). The bar area is pleasant and breakfast was good with hot and cold choices, including for vegetarians. Would definitely stay again if in Exeter.

This unfortunately is a review I'd rather not write as the service from the staff throughout our stay was exemplary. What concerned me was the state of the building and the rooms. It appeared that the focus of the business is the reception area - clean and presentable and the bar area. But the room we stayed in was tired (worn carpets) cramped (not a family room) and uncomfortable (not a place to relax) I had also noticed the state of the windows opposite. These are in a state of poor repair (very weathered) and in my experience when one fails they all fail My over ridding impression is the hotels profits are being creamed off by the owners as there is evidence of a slow decline in maintenance and investment. There was also an impression that it was understaffed; again profiteering rather than enhancing the customer experience. There are other hotels excelling in providing comfort and indulgence. Over all - good service/poor facilities
