Absolitely worth the detour, tickets are free and you don't need to book them beforehand. When we got there we were just in time for the firing display, one for the ww2 guns and one for the artillery. All the staff are in uniform and very friendly. There are lots of things happening through the day so spare some time for it.

A very wet and blustery day today, but despite this me and my father had a wonderful time at fort Nelson today. We have been once before and we returned again and what a pleasure it was. Fort Nelson has always been a fantastic display of history and an Incredible piece of military construction. The new D- Day exhibition was a nice touch this time and as usual the cafe delivered top notch service and food! Please do come here it's such a wonderful place! The staff are also extremely friendly especially the lady at the gift shop!

What a great experience, I last went here in the 90's when I lived in Portsmouth. It now has a wonderful new entry with shop amd cafe. The whole museum feels fresh and welcoming. The displays are very informative and the kiosk at the parade ground has very warm and friendly staff. I would highly recommend this museum
