About Venue
Nestled in an idyllic part of the Scottish Borders, Thirlestane Castle is a magnificent 16th century castle set in a meadow landscape. Family home to the Duke of Lauderdale, it is one of the oldest and finest castles in Scotland and still remains home to the Maitland family today.
Thirlestane Castle is available for weddings, corporate events, meetings, private dining and celebrations. Just 35 minutes south of Edinburgh it's easily accessible just off the A68.
The walls in this first floor room are lined with one of the largest collections of family portraits in Scotland including works by Romney, Reynolds, Lawrence and Lely. The individually lit paintings make the room a dramatic setting whatever time of the day.

Wow. We "owned" one whole end of the castle. Full kitchen, huge dining room, 5 rooms with kitchens and sitting rooms, large fire placed warmed "game" room - and we used all of it. Excellent staff, got piped into our stay, took a tour, used the trails (short ones around castle and Southern Upland Way which is connected), walked into Lauder for dinner/beer). In the middle (hour at best) of England/Lindisfarne, Traqhuair House, Tweed River, Melrose, Annandale Distillery, and do on. Looking forward to return.

Very nice castle and tour refreshing change that the rooms weren't roped off as you go around Very informative guides And a lovely tea break included in the price at the end Grounds are nice but not much to explore Overall a nice half day visit highly recommended

The guide Hazell (with Morag) made this visit so interesting and informative. Each room was lovingly explained - and plenty opportunity to ask questions throughout the tour. Stunning ceilings on the upper floor. Great historical knowledge and a real passion for the house.
