We had a great stay at this hotel. The design is really unique and stylish, a mix of different building types set in a beautiful garden. It’s also conveniently close to the airport, which made our travel much easier. The breakfast was excellent with a great variety of options, and the service overall was very pleasant. But what truly was amazing was the kindness of the staff. My daughter accidentally left behind her small plush puppy dog, which is very special to her and to us. The hotel not only found it, but mailed it back to us. A huge thank you to Chloe, who went out of her way to help, we’re so grateful! Highly recommend this place!

We just stayed here last week for a week to be near family for a wedding. The staff were brilliant, each and every one. Made us feel so welcome and my daughter loved it here. We used the pool nearly every day without restriction. We had a lovely breakfast every day with views over the grounds from each side of the building. The bar has charm and character. Lots of weddings happened here during our stay and I can understand why, its beautiful in the grounds and you can tell the staff care. We believe that the hotel could do with some long over due renovations but it is a very old property and looks like they are working the way through it, however the grounds and staff are what make it enjoyable here. With a special thanks to Chloe and Courtney on reception and Liz in the restaurant thank you, our daughter cant wait to come and stay again. If I could change anything I would only wish it could have been a proper bed in addition to the family room rather than a sofa bed for a weeks long stay as its put my back out slightly but other than that we are very pleased to have booked this little gem.

I am absolutely shocked by the standards at Macdonald Houstoun House. For a supposed 4-star hotel, the breakfast is nothing short of a scam. We paid full price for a full breakfast, only to discover in the morning that almost everything on the menu comes with a supplement — even an espresso is £4 extra! Outrageous. When I finally settled for a coffee and porridge, both were completely undrinkable and inedible. The quality was abysmal and nowhere near what you would expect from a hotel of this category. On top of that, the housekeeping is unacceptable. The first night they simply forgot to clean our room. The second day, they only made the bed but left the bathroom and toilets untouched. When we asked reception if this was normal, the answer was yes, that’s how they operate. For a pretended 4-star hotel, not providing proper daily cleaning is beyond disappointing. Overall, this hotel feels like a money-grab with zero attention to quality or service. Between the poor breakfast, hidden charges, and lack of basic housekeeping, it is nowhere near 4-star standards. I will never return and strongly advise others to avoid it.

We stayed here for two night to finish off a lovely holiday and were appalled. On the way up to the room the staircase carpet was completely threadbare and worn. When we got to our room we found the mirrored sliding door of the wardrobe was smashed and hidden behind the other door, our room had practically no natural lighting as another part of the building was blocking the window and there was a constant noice of glass smashing due to the bins being located beneath the window. We then went to have dinner in the bar and were told we could only have a handful of the option on the menu as they had no stock. When the food arrived it was stale, dry and the portions were childlike (especially considering the price). The quality was below standard. When we woke up in the morning after minimal sleep due to the night temperature of the room, I went to shower and the temperature dial came off in my hand (it had clearly just been placed back on without being fixed) as a result we were unable to get hot water. We reported this and were moved rooms. Once we moved rooms down a floor (ground floor) we had even less natural lighting, and couldn’t undraw the curtains as the staff were constantly walking past putting rubbish out. There were only 2 plug sockets in the room and both were within a foot of each other next to the desk, on the other side of the room nowhere near the bed. The breakfast was poor and even though it said included the majority of the menu included a charge. All around the decoration and furniture was outdated and mismatch and there has been no/minimal maintenance of the interior. It was unbecoming of a hotel with such a cost and such a good reputation.
