About Venue

Built in 1906 as a ‘Palace of Business’, originally the headquarters for one of the most powerful railway companies in England, it was built during the Golden Age of travel. The Grand is an iconic building, which reflects the elegance and glamour of the period, the success and wealth of the company that commissioned it.

In 2010, this imposing building was reborn as one of Yorkshire’s finest hotels and meeting spaces. Splendidly retaining many of its original features, The Grand exudes luxury and grandeur and has a reputation for exceptional service in the style and tradition you would expect from a five-star hotel, combined the warmest of Yorkshire welcomes.

The Grand, York is surrounded by the longest and best-preserved medieval walls in England. York is steeped in a rich history dating back to the Romans and the Vikings. The architecture and visitor attractions are testament to this, with a roll call of cultural treasures, museums and art.

The Grand, York is currently undergoing an extensive and exciting spa renovation, with our brand new spa opening on the 8th December 2025. Gests are still welcome to book Elemis spa treatments to enjoy throughout the duration of the renovations. We apologise for any inconvenience. Please be assured that the renovations should cause no further disruption to your stay with us.

The Chairman’s Suite was the original office of the Chair of the North Eastern Railway and accommodates up to 35 delegates. After board meetings or during particularly gruelling negotiations, he could retire to his suite and dine alone, with close associates or those he was keen to impress – and impress is what this room does very well.

Wood clad pillars, an ornate fireplace and views of the City Wall create a very definite mood: authority. The perfect setting for a meeting, private dining and special occasions.

Everything was just great except for the afternoon tea. People are still very nice but that terrace is probably the least attractive place in the whole hotel. Food choice is subjective but to me it was too many sweets, and sandwiches were like 1/3 of the normal size. But honestly I came for a beautiful interior and maybe a view, both were way worse than I expected. Overall it was one of the best hotels I've been, and I travel a lot.

Wonderful experience at The Grand. The rooms have been refurbished and now have lovely wood floors. It was spotlessly clean, the bed was big and comfortable, fluffy white towels, good shower pressure. Breakfast was incredible - a huge fresh buffet, omlettes cooked to order, and plenty of vegan and gluten free options. The cocktails in the bar were outstanding, with a bar menu for light meals. The vegan club sandwich was delicious. The service throughout the hotel is what really sets the Grand apart from the rest, from the doorman who remembered me even though I haven't stayed at the hotel for a while, the warm welcome at check in, the charming gentleman who seated me by a sunny window at breakfast, friendly service in the bar. Outstanding service is consistent throughout the hotel. The Spa is a wonderful new addition and I enjoyed the 'soft launch' experience . I'll definitely be back.

We stayed at The Grand Brighton for our wedding night and couldn’t have been happier with the experience. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel incredibly special and well looked after. The room was beautiful and elegant, the perfect place to unwind after such a big day. Breakfast the next morning was delicious with a great variety, and enjoying drinks in the bar overlooking the sea was the perfect way to continue the celebrations. We stayed a second night and were so glad we did — it gave us time to truly relax and soak it all in. A huge thank you to everyone at The Grand for making our stay so memorable. We highly recommend it for any special occasion or romantic getaway!

The perfect place to spend getting ready for our wedding and also to celebrate after the ceremony! Everything was so magical we got a lovely upgrade which was unexpected and really appreciated! The only down side was the weather so we couldn’t spend much time on the balcony but other than that I can’t not fault the stay. Brilliant cocktails, food and cyan delicious and the breakfast was fantastic so much choice!

My partner and I (both in our mid-50s) recently enjoyed our very first stay at The Grand Brighton, and we’re already talking about when we can return. This was a bit of a treat for us—a short seaside getaway—and The Grand certainly lived up to its name. From the moment we arrived, we were struck by the building’s classic charm. There’s a real sense of history to the place, but it’s been beautifully maintained and tastefully updated where needed. The check-in process was warm and efficient, and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful throughout our stay. Our room was clean, comfortable, and nicely furnished + air con. The bed was very comfortable (we slept incredibly well), and little touches like proper tea and coffee-making facilities and quality toiletries didn’t go unnoticed. Breakfast was generous and well-prepared, with a good range of options. We particularly appreciated the vegetarian choices and the fact that everything was hot and fresh. We also took advantage of the hotel bar for evening drinks, and it was lovely—relaxed atmosphere, good service, and a nice spot to unwind after a day of exploring the Lanes and strolling along the pier. This was our first visit to The Grand, and Brighton in general, but certainly not our last. We felt well looked after and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Highly recommended for couples looking for a bit of seaside elegance with a personal touch.
