About Venue

The Montcalm at the Brewery wears its quirky heritage with pride, an award-winning transformation from historic brewery to handsome five star hotel. With period features at every turn, it stays faithful to its past as the eighteenth century base of Whitbread & Co, but it’s also every inch the twenty-first century hotel you’d expect of a superbly central City of London location. A refreshing blend of elegance and informality, it’s the ideal urban retreat, welcoming wide-eyed explorers and time-pressed business travellers alike to the true heart of London.

Named after Samuel Whitbreads wife, the Cornwallis is the largest of all the private rooms, where once the brewerys beer barrels were stored. With high ceilings and generous proportions, its the ideal space for larger meetings or conferences.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I had an incredible stay at the Montcalm Brewery Hotel. After a very stressful week at work, it was exactly what I needed. As a solo female traveller, I was made to feel genuinely welcome from the moment I arrived. I was upgraded to a superior room, offered a glass of wine while waiting, and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful and accommodating. The room was beautiful and spotless, the breakfast was superb with plenty of fresh choices (and very good coffee!), and the location is fantastic with so much within walking distance. The level of service was exceptional throughout my stay, and the staff are a real credit to the hotel. They made a stressful week feel a little lighter. A wonderful experience from start to finish. I can’t wait to come back.

For a five star hotel i expected better. £600 to have no air con and not be offered even a fan. Not happy in the slightest. I see there’s lots of reviews about the air con situation, you’d of thought they would have found a solution by now. It wasn’t until our last night we were given a new room with working air conditioning as half the hotel was effected. As much as i am glad we at least got one night with air conditioning.. it was a bit of a slap in the face to know this is what we could of had. Even the corridors were a lot cooler than our rooms. We had to sleep on wet towels just to even try to sleep. No compensation refund offer. No complimentary anything. Just an slight apology and having to ask 5 times for a fan after they decided to just leave it outside our room whilst we were gone when they said they would put it in our room, which of course, as everyone was suffering it got taken probably immediately. Even the cheapest premier inns put fans in our rooms without even having to ask. I will not be coming back.

Probably the most disappointing hotel experience I have had in a very long time! The hotel reception waited for my group to check in and pay, before telling us that they have a problem with their aircon in some rooms! (We later discovered this has been going on for several weeks... by reading some of the most recent online reviews...) but they chose during the hottest London summer we have had in years, to not tell us until we had already checked in! Very dishonest and dishonourable conduct! My room was in the South Block, which is around the back of the hotel through a back door on the lower ground floor. The entrance alone was very tired looking, worn carpets, and what seemed like a service lift, as it was quite battered looking. Far from the standards of a 4 or 5 star experience. My room was very small and very dark with very dark mahogany wood furniture that had multiple chips in the wood and various stains, and very worn looking carpet, that looked like it needed a good industrial steam clean - not just hoovering. The window closely faced another external wall, so you felt very boxed in! The windows also did not open. So no natural air... in a room with no real working aircon! On my way to dinner, I asked reception to put a fan in my room for the evening. When I came back to my room I found this huge piece of equipment by my bed that took up so much of the little space, and was making so much noise that I had to switch it off as I couldn't sleep with the noise! In the morning I was then woken around 6am by a knocking sound in my bathroom, which appeared to be in the ceiling (perhaps the plumbing). Overall the hotel is very far from a 4 star and definitely not a 5 star hotel. Really disappointing experience!

I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience deserves one. The hotel experienced a complete air conditioning failure, but instead of telling guests the truth, I was repeatedly moved between three different rooms, all without functioning air conditioning. One of the replacement rooms was much smaller than the room category I had booked and paid for, which was completely unacceptable. After a 15-hour workday, I spent my evening packing, unpacking, and waiting for staff until almost 2:00 AM instead of getting any rest. Reception repeatedly promised someone would arrive "in five minutes," but it often took hours. Phone calls went unanswered, and I had to keep going downstairs to ask for updates. I was also asked to leave my key card before work so my belongings could be moved to my new room, but when I returned, not everything had been transferred as promised. The most disappointing aspect was not the air conditioning failure itself—it was the lack of honesty, communication, and organisation. Had staff simply explained from the beginning that the entire building was affected, I would not have spent hours unnecessarily moving between rooms. Management eventually apologised and issued a partial refund, which I appreciate. However, it did not make up for the disruption to my business trip or the fact that I never received the room category I had paid for. I would not stay here again and cannot recommend it for business travellers who need a reliable and stress-free stay.

Do not stay here. Honestly, this was one of the most disappointing hotel experiences I’ve had. When we first arrived, the reception staff and manager were so welcoming and professional that we genuinely thought we were checking into a luxury hotel. Then we got to our room. The hallways smelled, and the room itself had visible stains on the bed, chair, and floor. It was shocking considering how the hotel presents itself. The room did not feel clean, and it definitely wasn’t what we paid for. To their credit, they did offer us 50% off the room. We were also told they would arrange a cab for us, but after sitting around waiting, the manager was nowhere to be found and we ended up ordering our own Uber. The room made us so uncomfortable that we checked into another hotel, where we could actually relax and not worry about the cleanliness of the room. The photos speak for themselves. A nice lobby and friendly staff can only go so far when the room itself is not clean. Save your money and stay somewhere else.
