Q: What’s included in the venue hire price?

A private, intimate library room with historic character, configured for meetings or small dinners (up to 50), plus Wi-Fi and small AV (screen/flipchart) if needed. Existing furnishings are included.

Q: Does the venue provide catering, or can I bring my own food and drinks?

In-house refreshments and catering are available; external food/drink isn’t allowed. We can supply tea/coffee, lunches, or snacks.

Q: Can I decorate or brand the venue for my event?

Simple, unobtrusive décor and branding (welcome sign, flowers, a banner) are encouraged; please discuss any extensive theming to protect the room’s finishes.

Q: Is the venue accessible, and does it have parking or nearby transport links?

The Library is served by lifts for step-free access. On-street parking is limited, but Hillhead subway and buses are nearby.

Q: What is the venue’s pricing structure e.g. minimum spend, dry hire, or package options?

A low flat hire fee of about £90 applies, with optional in-house catering. No minimum spend is required.

Located in the heart of the West End, Glasgow University Union is a historic venue with impressive architecture and original features. It offers great flexibility, allowing it to be transformed into a stunning wedding venue or a professional corporate setting. Whether you're planning a large dinner event, conference, or wedding, we have extensive experience in hosting academic, corporate, and private functions.

Our venue has two spacious rooms capable of accommodating up to 200 guests for conferences, birthday parties, and evening receptions. Additionally, we offer three more intimate spaces, ensuring we have the perfect room for your event. Our bars are fully stocked with a wide selection of quality drinks, and our exceptional catering team prepares all dishes in-house. They are also adept at catering to specific requirements, whether you prefer canapés or a three-course meal.

The Bridie Library is an excellent choice for corporate meetings and as a breakout space during conferences. It offers a peaceful ambience and retains its original features, boasting a rich history. Additionally, this room serves as an ideal venue for hosting intimate dinners and receptions, providing a serene and elegant setting within the building.

Cancellation policy

The deposit paid for a booking will be refunded if the event is cancelled within 28 days of booking confirmation. If you cancel within 7 days of the event start date, then the full room hire charge or deposit and 50% of the latest quote, plus any expenses incurred by GUU will be owed. If you do not show up for your event or cancel without informing GUU, the full invoiced amount will be owed.

Other rules

We do not host 16th or 18th birthday parties. Please note that we do not allow external catering at all.

Omg, what can I say.... Honestly had the best time ever, from start to finish , Rachel & Sarah were absolutely amazing they were so lovely & helpful with everything we wanted to happen. The venue...Omg absolutely unbelievable, absolutely brilliant we loved every part , Menu was top class, all our guests loved everything, Tom was absolutely fantastic as were all the staff , absolutely Perfect. We celebrated our wedding reception here and it was truly wonderful. The staff are superb - really thank you again - nothing was of any trouble, the set-up, food, service and bar tending was immaculate. We highly recommend this venue for a special occasion!

It was easy to locate via Google maps, event was properly organised. Best thing is we got reminded about the event via email. The organisers were polite too. Keep it up!
